Cookie Update

Hey everyone

To my surprise Cookie is doing pretty well.  I’m on day four today medicating her regularly and  this morning she was walking around and eyes open a little and she is trying to eat.  YEA! Iam still putting the neosporin on her eyes to help her open them.   I’ll keep you in touch.               K

Cookie got hurt (My Chicken)

Hello Readers,  Well anybody that has meet me knows that my daughter Talina started my chicken madness about four years ago w/two beautiful Silkies from flagstaff.

Since then I have become the chicken lady of New River,  I have 25 now. I have incubated and hatched maybe 30 a year twice a year. I sell my chicks and I also sell the beautiful eggs.

Cookie who is one of my leghorn’s that I got in Flag (pictured above). I’ve had her two years maybe, Yes I name all my chickens. Anyways  She and Elpoyo (my original rooster) and a couple of the older girls come down from the coop every morning since the 4th of july when my pen around my coop completely blew away. Not compleatly away but to the next property above us.

Cookie has so much personality she purrs that’s how she talks, she loves to wander and is a investigator.  She first started exploring on her own then started getting all the others to go with her.  Well, to my sadness it got her in trouble Sunday morning.  Let me back track, Last weekend my other half started putting the pen back up, it was so HOT we didn’t get to the roof yet…

Cookie started flying over to get out, “that little shit” there was no stopping her she loved exploring. So Sunday morning I went out to feed my gang and Cookie was out again but she wasn’t wandering instead she was just sitting on a rock.

I walked up and she looked awful, her head was all swollen her eyes were full of blood, her little gobbles and her mouth were also full of blood.  I took her back into the coop put her in the rooster hut for some quietness and started thinking.

Well the dental assistant in me knew I needed to get antibiotics in her. I had Terramycin soluble powder from Pfizer, It’s for chickens/ poultry.  So I started giving her that with a liquid syringe.

I needed Jerry putting that damn roof back on so I barked about that, it that gave me more time to think what can I do to help her.  We all talked it over and decided she probably got bit by a snake or scorpion.  OK! so what does she need now?

An anti-venom would counter act the reaction she’s getting with her head swelling… uh, don’t have that! Well what would be close?  How about Benadryl? Yea, that might work!

So I quarnered her that evening and started giving her the benadryl and the antibiotic every 3 hours.  Well bless her heart she made it though the day and that night with me coming out and administering every 3 hours.

She’s a fighter! Now I see she wants to live. Next I need to think of something to clear up the dried blood that was in her eyes so she can open them. They were crusted closed and  I didn’t want her to go blind cause how will she find food & water? Another light bulb went off!

Neosporin would moisten her eyes, maybe.  Yes that will work!  Now I was doing all of the above every three hours. After the ointment I went out and her eyes were open, yay! So far this is all working, ha ha.

She’s walking around a little still not eating or drinking, now I know she needs energy so that would mean sugar water like you would give a baby chik. She is not very healthy or strong at all. Yogurt is so beneficial in all ways. It’s an antibiotic, has amino acids and an anti-depressant. I’m sure she could use extra protein also. So I add that to my my routine over the course of two days. She is chirping and purring a little, she wants me to stop now cause she is feeling better.

I think and hope she will make it. I have taken photos below of Cookie and the Flock. Oh and I also have photos of my chicken coop that Jerry “He so sweet” has put back together . My family jokes and says if anybody can help Cookie it would be Dr.  McDougalhopper.  I will be tickled if she does survive and I will keep you informed.  THANKS ALL for reading.        K

Our Fathers Day

Welcome back to the ranch. How was Fathers Day for everyone? I hope it was memorable and you all called your Fathers or sent Cyber cards. I did. I sent one to my Dad who I talk to often he lives in the Wash area in Vancover, beautiful area. I also sent one to my Step Dad who took the time to raise use four kids for ten years and give us a stable parent in the home. Hear is the link to the E-Cards Awesome Cyber Cards

Our Fathers day took me couple of days to perpare for. A friend of ours gave us a way of cooking a roast so it to be very tender, Don’t really know if this is a family secret or not. I bought a Prime Choice roast at Sprouts , Dry rubbed it down w/Corky’s B-Q my son in law pick up for us in Memphis when he was layed over on his way to Indiana anyways spiced it good and put it in the freezer and there it stayed for 2hrs. then put in the refrigerator for 3 days they said to do “but I coun’dt imagine” l had it in the refrigerator for a day in a half. Sunday is here and I pulled the roast out preheated the oven to 500 they said then put the roast in and dropped the temp. to 325 and cook for 20 min. per. pound. About half way in I checked the roast and it looked alittle dry, well I was cooking the roast in a pirex which “I don’t recomended anymore”, I went ahead and put a little water in the pan to moisturised the roast and guess what happened. “The Dam Pan Exploded” yes glass every where the oven was full of glass the floor and even down in our TV room I had the oven door open you know poring water into the pan. Well it is now a hour before everyone is to arrive and there is glass everywhere and the Roast Oh God, J my other half came running in to see all the commotion and check me, He said it sounded like a explosion. I grabbed the roast and reaching in to the oven I severely burned my arms in two places but I got the roast out threw it in the sink which was empty and J went right to cleaning out the oven and floor and the other room, I started scrubbing the roast yes scrubbing I didn’t know if it had any dam glass on it so I needed to clean it up and yes during the washing the roast I lost alot of the dry rub spices I spent days putting on so I rub it down again. The oven was all clear of glass so the roast went back in and in a metal pan this time and we only lost 20 min or so. J and I decided to not say a word to the kids that were coming over . So we didn’t and if I may say so, It was the most tender of a roast I have ever cooked . And that was our Fathers day and a Dam Great one at that. Sorry I didn’t grab any pictures I was in shock and in a hurry we had a deadline you know, but I did find another person that had a similar misshap so take a look at hers it will help the vision. This is not my explosion hers was a macaroni in Pyrex and mine exploded into three rooms. That how strong of a blast we had. See you next time, K

Today Lets “Get mad”

You know as I read other Blogs it is good to know that others are getting worried about what is happening in the world, We are having Natural disasters our weather is destroying land and homes People are loosing there homes w/mortgage prices. the gas is $4.00 now If I had a job I would be struggling to get there. What are we going to do. More of us need to boy-cot gas stations, pick one a month and don’t get gas there ,stick to it. Lets send a message. “Get Mad”

We live on some land and becoming self efficient has always been our dream. We get a breeze morning and evening we could & should have wind turban’s but the cost is too much on our budget, we could be using what we get from the wind to produce our own power. Jay Leno has a fancy Wind Turban set up , it supplies his garage of all things. we could also be using solar power, Ariz has sun 11 mon out of the year we should be storing solar. The solar panels also cost so much in the thousands. Ive looked into that and if we did put up panels the electric company would only give us back a percentage of it, why not all! why do we have to be on there grid why can’t we be self efficient. And the Gas shortage, Well we don’t have a shortage in the U.S. we are pumping gas everywhere everyday why aren’t we able to use that? You know I’ve been looking into alternative fuel and I like the Idea of running your car on water the kits are under $ 100.00 or methane and there are other choices but again we are being stopped because of the cost to do these things. I know all my Kids have heard this frustration from me for a while but I want to get it out there to all of you We need to get mad . I think the Gov. and the lg. Corporations need to know we are mad and we want to live greener but we cant when the price to be greener are out of our reach. I get so Mad at all that is going on and its notall me. Tell me your thoughts,I’d love to hear.      K

Weekends Never a dull moment

My Honey and I keep our house open to any and all the Kids and we were just saying we’ve not had a weekend off in four weeks now. Weekend before Last we went up to Pine Our friends have a cabin we helped them get , were in real estate. They invite us up alot, its cool because we have another couple that also has a cabin right next store so when one goes up we all go up and can stay either or place. real nice, Uh. Last weekend just in a 24hr. period my Oldest Daughter T and I were recalling all the things that happened. Here we go. Our son in law N needed to be picked up at the airport in phoenix He had a Interview in Indiana he is a Reporter and Anchor man, anyways he wanted to hang with us for a couple of days, well the guest room was occupied w/Jerry’s Daughter who is home from Collage with her Cat that never comes out of our Beautiful Guest room and she also comes with a Hairless Crescent who has intestinal problems and boos blood all over the porch. I also have my Sixteen year old and his room is next to the guest room and is a distaster and ours is up stairs, so poor son in law N. I could only offer him the Couch to sleep on. Not so bad but I have 15 baby chickens that also are in the Living room. I don’t think he got much sleep w/chirping sounds of 15 baby’s. Our Collage Daughter came home from her Friday night about 1:30 am didn’t bother N on the couch or us but then she came into our room at 3:30am crying and throwing up, she said she only had 3 beers at the party why was her stomick cramping, So I jumped up running into the kitchen {not Jerry who is her Father} and crabed a pan for her so my carpet would stay clean then Jerry ’s telling me “Grab her a pan ,wash cloth and some MOM well I was doing all that so I glared at him He knew to stop, I was doing ok, so I comforted her in the middle of the hall she sat on the floor and was crying again and still throwing up once again I thought of N on the couch having to listening to all this and the chickens too. He really didn’t get any sleep. Next day we had a good morning and my daughter T was coming to get N from Flagstaff all was well intil my oldest son G came walking over. He lives in the Guest house 25ft over and informed us he broke up w/his girlfriend who also lives there along w/there little one Hazel who I babysit she is 6mon. old. We all said “what do you mean you broke up” Where was I and when did this happen. I guess they were fighting about 11 or 12 at night. So I was bumming, baby Hazel was gone. They did work it out w/a little bit of coaching from me within a day. Well in the mean time Jerry’s oldest son J who lives down below on the next property had his dog Boomer in the truck and J barrels around all of our properties like a bat out of hell heading up his driveway w/Boomer hanging out the window and the dog falls out going around the corner and hit the ground hard and landed on a bolder and knocks off top and bottom cainie’s on one side. So I get that phone call and we all go down to see what the dog might need. I was a Dental Asst for 13yrs so I should be able to fix this, So they think. We did struggle to put a temp. sedative in the teeth but that’s temporary, you know. OK so T & N thought well were ready to head up the hill to Flagstaff they seen enough activity so they pack the car and we all said goodbye well they didn’t even make it down our hill and there car just stopped we had but oil in it just before cause it was knocking but it quit. So the phone rang again to say were down the hill come get us. Well I had no place to but these people “I mean kids” OK so I needed to think quick. My youngest so N 16 had just left to visit his father for a week, that’s usually when I go into his dungeon to do a complete cleaning you know bring up 2 or 3 lg. bags of garbage and all the kitchen dishes well I didn’t even have time to do that the kids needed a place to sleep It was a huge mess. I apologized and said “get in the bed and don’t move, nothing should bother you.” there saying “Yea! right! OK MOM!!.” It all went fine and I had more Quality time with them the next day while they dowelled on there car and what to do. See even thou it was a busy weekend I wound’t change a thing. See you all next time K
