Cookie got hurt (My Chicken)

Hello Readers,  Well anybody that has meet me knows that my daughter Talina started my chicken madness about four years ago w/two beautiful Silkies from flagstaff.

Since then I have become the chicken lady of New River,  I have 25 now. I have incubated and hatched maybe 30 a year twice a year. I sell my chicks and I also sell the beautiful eggs.

Cookie who is one of my leghorn’s that I got in Flag (pictured above). I’ve had her two years maybe, Yes I name all my chickens. Anyways  She and Elpoyo (my original rooster) and a couple of the older girls come down from the coop every morning since the 4th of july when my pen around my coop completely blew away. Not compleatly away but to the next property above us.

Cookie has so much personality she purrs that’s how she talks, she loves to wander and is a investigator.  She first started exploring on her own then started getting all the others to go with her.  Well, to my sadness it got her in trouble Sunday morning.  Let me back track, Last weekend my other half started putting the pen back up, it was so HOT we didn’t get to the roof yet…

Cookie started flying over to get out, “that little shit” there was no stopping her she loved exploring. So Sunday morning I went out to feed my gang and Cookie was out again but she wasn’t wandering instead she was just sitting on a rock.

I walked up and she looked awful, her head was all swollen her eyes were full of blood, her little gobbles and her mouth were also full of blood.  I took her back into the coop put her in the rooster hut for some quietness and started thinking.

Well the dental assistant in me knew I needed to get antibiotics in her. I had Terramycin soluble powder from Pfizer, It’s for chickens/ poultry.  So I started giving her that with a liquid syringe.

I needed Jerry putting that damn roof back on so I barked about that, it that gave me more time to think what can I do to help her.  We all talked it over and decided she probably got bit by a snake or scorpion.  OK! so what does she need now?

An anti-venom would counter act the reaction she’s getting with her head swelling… uh, don’t have that! Well what would be close?  How about Benadryl? Yea, that might work!

So I quarnered her that evening and started giving her the benadryl and the antibiotic every 3 hours.  Well bless her heart she made it though the day and that night with me coming out and administering every 3 hours.

She’s a fighter! Now I see she wants to live. Next I need to think of something to clear up the dried blood that was in her eyes so she can open them. They were crusted closed and  I didn’t want her to go blind cause how will she find food & water? Another light bulb went off!

Neosporin would moisten her eyes, maybe.  Yes that will work!  Now I was doing all of the above every three hours. After the ointment I went out and her eyes were open, yay! So far this is all working, ha ha.

She’s walking around a little still not eating or drinking, now I know she needs energy so that would mean sugar water like you would give a baby chik. She is not very healthy or strong at all. Yogurt is so beneficial in all ways. It’s an antibiotic, has amino acids and an anti-depressant. I’m sure she could use extra protein also. So I add that to my my routine over the course of two days. She is chirping and purring a little, she wants me to stop now cause she is feeling better.

I think and hope she will make it. I have taken photos below of Cookie and the Flock. Oh and I also have photos of my chicken coop that Jerry “He so sweet” has put back together . My family jokes and says if anybody can help Cookie it would be Dr.  McDougalhopper.  I will be tickled if she does survive and I will keep you informed.  THANKS ALL for reading.        K

Our Fathers Day

Welcome back to the ranch. How was Fathers Day for everyone? I hope it was memorable and you all called your Fathers or sent Cyber cards. I did. I sent one to my Dad who I talk to often he lives in the Wash area in Vancover, beautiful area. I also sent one to my Step Dad who took the time to raise use four kids for ten years and give us a stable parent in the home. Hear is the link to the E-Cards Awesome Cyber Cards

Our Fathers day took me couple of days to perpare for. A friend of ours gave us a way of cooking a roast so it to be very tender, Don’t really know if this is a family secret or not. I bought a Prime Choice roast at Sprouts , Dry rubbed it down w/Corky’s B-Q my son in law pick up for us in Memphis when he was layed over on his way to Indiana anyways spiced it good and put it in the freezer and there it stayed for 2hrs. then put in the refrigerator for 3 days they said to do “but I coun’dt imagine” l had it in the refrigerator for a day in a half. Sunday is here and I pulled the roast out preheated the oven to 500 they said then put the roast in and dropped the temp. to 325 and cook for 20 min. per. pound. About half way in I checked the roast and it looked alittle dry, well I was cooking the roast in a pirex which “I don’t recomended anymore”, I went ahead and put a little water in the pan to moisturised the roast and guess what happened. “The Dam Pan Exploded” yes glass every where the oven was full of glass the floor and even down in our TV room I had the oven door open you know poring water into the pan. Well it is now a hour before everyone is to arrive and there is glass everywhere and the Roast Oh God, J my other half came running in to see all the commotion and check me, He said it sounded like a explosion. I grabbed the roast and reaching in to the oven I severely burned my arms in two places but I got the roast out threw it in the sink which was empty and J went right to cleaning out the oven and floor and the other room, I started scrubbing the roast yes scrubbing I didn’t know if it had any dam glass on it so I needed to clean it up and yes during the washing the roast I lost alot of the dry rub spices I spent days putting on so I rub it down again. The oven was all clear of glass so the roast went back in and in a metal pan this time and we only lost 20 min or so. J and I decided to not say a word to the kids that were coming over . So we didn’t and if I may say so, It was the most tender of a roast I have ever cooked . And that was our Fathers day and a Dam Great one at that. Sorry I didn’t grab any pictures I was in shock and in a hurry we had a deadline you know, but I did find another person that had a similar misshap so take a look at hers it will help the vision. This is not my explosion hers was a macaroni in Pyrex and mine exploded into three rooms. That how strong of a blast we had. See you next time, K
